Widespread protests erupted across major cities in Pakistan, escalating into violent clashes with security forces and resulting in multiple deaths and injuries, police and local officials reported on Tuesday.
Demonstrators gathered in large numbers to voice their grievances over political, economic, and governance issues, but several rallies quickly turned confrontational, prompting law enforcement to intervene with force in attempts to control crowds.
Deadly Escalations in Multiple Cities
According to official and eyewitness accounts:
- Karachi: Clashes between protesters and police left at least three people dead and dozens injured as demonstrators attempted to breach barricades.
- Lahore: Protests disrupted traffic on major arteries, with several injuries reported after baton charges and tear gas were deployed.
- Islamabad: Demonstrations near government buildings were met with a heavy security presence; officers used live rounds in some instances, resulting in casualties.
Authorities also reported numerous arrests as law enforcement stepped up operations to contain unrest and prevent further escalation.
Government and Police Response
Government officials condemned the violence and justified security measures as necessary to restore order and protect public safety. A senior interior ministry official said law enforcement was acting within its mandate to disperse unruly crowds and prevent property damage.
Police issued warnings urging protesters to disperse peacefully and highlighted that the use of force would be proportionate and aimed at minimizing civilian harm.
Protesters’ Grievances
Organisers of the rallies said their demonstrations were driven by frustrations over economic hardships, rising inflation, unemployment, and perceived failures in governance. They called on authorities to address public concerns and engage in meaningful dialogue.
Some protest groups also demanded accountability from political leaders, citing corruption and lack of responsiveness to citizens’ daily challenges.
Casualties and Medical Response
Hospitals in affected cities reported treating a growing number of injured civilians and security personnel. Emergency rooms handled cases ranging from gunshot wounds and fractures to injuries from teargas exposure.
Healthcare workers appealed for calm and urged authorities to ensure safe passage for ambulances and medical teams to reach critical areas amid ongoing unrest.
Warnings and Curfew Enforcement
Several district administrations imposed partial curfews and restrictions on public gatherings to curb the violence. Authorities also blocked major intersections and deployed additional security personnel to reinforce containment zones.
Officials warned that more stringent measures, including suspension of mobile internet services and public transport restrictions, could be imposed if the situation deteriorates further.
Calls for Restraint
Civil rights groups and human rights advocates condemned excessive use of force and urged both protesters and security forces to exercise restraint. They called for independent investigations into incidents of alleged brutality and for political leaders to take immediate steps toward de-escalation.
